«Authentic reading and its role in teaching English»

The article focuses on the use of supplementary authentic reading texts in teaching English as a foreign language. It aims at improving the reading skills and strategies of adult learners in a conventional classroom setting and in a computerized learning environment. The use of authentic materials is an important principle of communicative language learning and it contributes to the development of an individual learning style and learner autonomy. Developing reading skills is an important part of foreign language teaching. Foreign language textbooks offer a variety of reading texts but there is usually a one-size-fits-all approach to the way the texts are presented and to the choice of reading comprehension exercises. When that is the case, foreign language teachers try to find supplementary texts and design their own exercises. In order to achieve better results, certain issues have to be taken into account. These are the similarities and differences between reading in one’s first language and reading in a foreign language, the reasons for reading and the aims of a reading programme, the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic texts at all levels of language proficiency and the criteria we use to choose appropriate texts from various sources.

The paper presents an educational project, the main task of which is reduced to an aggravation of pupils' interest to creativity of the great poet A.S. Pushkin, as well as improvement of the efficiency of his works reading by intellectually and artistically gifted children. The classification of Pushkin's characters by the parameters of perception of reality, honor and prestige, enlightenment and learning is made in the work. The author points out the possibility of preparation the the script of the play “Love and secret freedom” and organization of elective course “Workshop of Pushkin’s verse” within the scope of the project.

The paper emphasizes the relevance of the reader’s competence development at the University by means of English as a Foreign Language as an important component of the formation of communicative professionally oriented competence for the purpose of pursuing long life professional, research and personal growth of graduates at the international level in a global multicultural world. Specificity of forming the readers’ competence of students of technical specialties at the University is analyzed, taking into account the educational levels of the academic space organization at the university. The set of essential approaches: competence, interdisciplinary and personality-oriented in the process of English for Specific Purposes learning is taken into account. The concept of “reading competence” is considered as a valuable component of general professional competence of Higher School students of non-linguistic major. The importance of using Internet technologies as an interactive basis for teaching English for Specific Purposes is accented.

In recent years, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has become not only a problem in the organization of the educational process, but it is also becoming a public problem, since children of school and preschool age hardly learn and retain information. The volume of information has increased many times. Our ability to work with it, translate into a practical plane, remains at the same level. The intensive development of information technologies in conjunction with the development of scientific progress leads to the need to improve the learning mechanism. Adaptive technologies of intellectual abilities development of a person take into account the natural interests of people of different age groups, allow to optimize intellectual processes, the recoding of information teaches a person to think. The better the brain encodes information, the better it remembers. The main characteristics of adaptive technologies for the development of a person's intellectual abilities through a single path – speed reading – are considered in the context of practical and applied recommendations that allow the learner to master various types of reading.
